Would we be better off...?
After all of this time we still lack a standing offer by our government. I can't help but wonder with all of our resources, would we be better off as our own sovreign country? South Louisiana would become one of the 20 richest countries in the world. If the Feds don't want to help us at this time of calamity then just let us go.

As bad as the US government is, I feel giving up the federal court system and the Bill of rights would be a dire mistake -- assuming the feds would allow us to cecede.

Public Debate
We could take care of ourselves. That is the real point. If they 'our government' won't... We can.

We have rich natual resourches. We have all we need. If the U.S. would just let us go we will be fully finaced by the IMF. That gives us new Dutch leeves and enough to rebuild in short order. WE CAN!

To bring this issue to the level of public debate is the first step towards reformation. When the people can see they can impower them selves then we posses the power of change.

Re: Public Debate
The problem is that without the federal court system, the rich and greedy are far more prone to make repressive laws. I doubt slavery would have ended without the federal government's intervention. Even if it did, without the federal government, blacks would still be on the back of the bus, denied the same education as whites, and there would be poll taxes to prevent the poor of all races from having a say in government. The rich and greedy are all too powerful in this state now. Removing federal oversight would, imo, be a very bad idea.

Some places might do well without the federal government, but certainly not Louisiana. The gentrifiers and repressors of the poor are bad enough, but without federal oversight, it would get far far worse.

Then, of couse, there is the practicality of your suggestion. I would not want to see New Orleans turned into another Fallujah. The US troops would just stomp us flat. We got oil. The feds ain't gonna let oil get away from it. Sheman's march ain't nothing compared what the federal troops would do to us.

According to The Tax Foundation website, in 2003 Louisiana received $1.47 in Federal spending for every $1.00 collected from the state in Federal taxes. So, by one measure, the state is getting more from the Federal government than it gives. But I think your argument is that South Louisiana would get to take with it most of the oil reserves? Not at ALL likely (as if secession is at all likely in & of itself).

BTW, California (my home state) has its own secession movement too.

That's Souther Louisiana
Southern Louisiana is a cash cow. For decades we have supported the rest of the state. With all of New Orleans revenue, we still have bad streets and schools. A Bannana Repepulic is not really to blame. Even though a few line their pockets, it dose not equal the vast amount that leaves our area for other parts of the state.

After all of our finacal support the norther part of the state says not in my back yard.

We don't need northern Louisiana.

We could join OPEC... and build ourselves so damn fine levees!

If the USA would just let us go, we would be financed in full.

The last time someone tried to secede, the U.S. whooped their ass and said "no."
You think that Southern Louisiana has a chance?

What happened last time someone threatened the oil supply? The U.S. invaded, claiming "weapons of mass destruction."
So even if the Republicans were willing to let Southern Louisiana become the nation of, uh, Crawfish, they'd still invade if you didn't agree to Bush's terms of handing over the oil. Only this way they'd bomb first.

I'm not haten
We could play nice. We could allow open tourism and trade. We could make the U.S. a favorite tradeing partner. No worries, we can sell them oil.

Allmost over night we could have a shirmp boat navy and a gold toothed army. We can take care of ourselfs. Just let us go!

I'd be all for it, but then someone would name me for another policital office again, and I don't know if I could take that.

Hey you...

Funny, for a long time in my head I've had a graphic novel plot with that idea in it. But it takes place (in my plot line) only after the rest of the coutnry is in significantly more chaos than it is currently, and isn't the only part of the country that is seceding.

That sounds like an interesting book!
