Abandoned Vehicles

Hey there all.

There's this red truck that's been parked on my street for more than a month. Grass is growing up into the wheel wells. None of my neighbors know anything about it, other than it's been there doing nothing for quite some time. It's got Texas plates, and I'm assuming it's stolen and has been abandoned on my street.

It takes up valuable parking space during the softball and kickball games at St Pat's field. This thing's gotta go. Who do I call? Report it to NOPD or do I just call a towing company?

Anyone got any input on this?

There's a city department you can call to report it and they will (eventually) come take it away. Of course I can't find a link to it on the website, so perhaps you could call City Hall and ask for more info.

You'll have to call this one guy, I can't remember his name. He probably won't be in, so you can leave him a message. He'll never call you back, and the car will probably sit there for another month, at least. Anyway that's what happened to me.

I don't have that number anymore (Officer Pat something, maybe?) but here's a number I found for East Bank abandon vehicles. May not work:

The Parking Division of the Department of Public Works handles abandoned vehicles. Their number is 504-658-8200. Be prepared to supply the exact location (street address if possible), vehicle’s license plate number (if there is one) and make, model and color of the truck.

I called them a few months back and was told that they weren't towing at that time because the impound lots were all full (but they were looking for more space.) If you have any luck getting that truck towed please consider updating this post with your experience.

I just received this from the Algiers Point Association listserv. I thought it might be the update you were looking for.

A second issue which continues to concern the Point is abandoned vehicles. A number of neighbors have spoken to me about this long term problem. I have spoken with the 4th district and the current issue lies in the cities limited ability to store the towed vehicles. To clear this storage area the city will auction the vehicles it currently has on 23 July. This will then free space for the city to again tow vehicles. For those of you who have been discouraged by a lack of action in the past, it's time to call again. You can call the cities 311 number or you may call the city at 658-2299. Please be prepared with a Vehicle make, color, if it has broken windows, flat tires, collision damage, expired or missing licence plate, has a current brake tag, or previous abandoned tag number (which may be in wax pencil on the windows). You will also need the approximate street address and cross streets that it lies between. Multiple vehicles are accepted.

The truck belongs to a cook (or at least he was a cook) at Storyville. Max is his name. It broke down on him...I'm not in nola or I'd ask him...but that's where the truck came from and why its taking up kickball spots.

(Personal Opinion)

I'm glad it's taking up spot for your elitist kickball league...that'll teach them for telling us our team was too *punk* to play.

I have nothing to do with the softball league or the kickball league. I just watch the games from my porch. If it's someone who's having trouble with the car, I won't do anything about it. I've been in those situations before. Since no one has done anything with it in over a month, I just assumed that it was abandoned.

Storyville is the joint with the crazy good hamburgers near Ms. Mae's right? I'll ask abou the truck the next time I'm over there.

yeah that's the place. check with them, he might be in jail, if thats the case haul that sucker away!

(you can also ask at ms. maes, they know who he is and could tell you if he's in jail)

Hey, this is kinda random, but did Max used to cook at St. Charles Tavern? I may be confusing him with someone else--curious.
