The caterpillar voraciously eats the foliage of oaks and has a nasty sting when touched by humans or pets. Live oaks were stressed by the storm and the subsequent drought. As with fertilization, fully licensed, reputable companies are contracted to spray infested trees with insecticide. Trees cannot be sprayed until the caterpillars have hatched.
